Workshop day 3 – Fort Snelling

By ravsitar | November 19, 2007

I apologize for the delay in getting this posted. Work has been wicked busy for the last 2 weeks. Lots of projects popping up that need to be done by the end of November. So by the time I get home, I’m not up for more setting on the computer. I’ve been reading a good deal and playing the Wii. Managed to get Pro status in Golf, Bowling, and Tennis.
Two days down and only two to go. Another early morning. But thankfully the day looked to be sunny and warm.

The morning session was a walk through Adobe Lightroom. It’s setup for a speedy Digital Asset Management. Mostly for whole image editing. At the moment my photo processing workflow is this:

Copy images from CF card to computer. Photos put in folders named and dated ( XXXX 2007-MM-DD )

Run through the images with Nikon Viewer to delete of obvious crap (blank images, super blurry, totally blown out)

Open the images with Bibble Lite.

-First run through the images – Look at the images one by one. Rate images either 1 or 3 (1 indicates an OK image worth keeping, 3 indicates an image worth editing) or delete them.

-Edit images with Bibble

-Export images to full quality jpg images.

If the image requires it, I will edit it in Paint Shop Pro.

For the most part about 80% of my images never see PSP. It’s a good way to keep up with the numbers of photos I shoot. And, now that I’ve started deleting the crap (instead of keeping everything), my hard drives aren’t filling nearly as fast. For the way I work, I think buying Lightroom would be a waste. I don’t keyword photos and my folder setup is good enough for now. If I ever started shooting more paid work, it might make sense. But for now I’ll keep the money for lenses.

That afternoon, we had our excursion for the workshop. During our research, Bob and I came down to Fort Snelling as the best option. It’s quite the place and we had a perfect day. Sunny, blue skies, and nice and warm. We arrived just in time to watch the first canon firing of the day. The assignment for the day was “fake” with a set focal length requirement. This was far harder than you’d think. Normally at these theme places, the commercialism is overdone and apparent everywhere. But Fort Snelling is nice and subtle. Very little non period items make there way into the fort.

After an enjoyable afternoon of shooting at Fort Snelling, most of us headed to Outback Steak House for supper and some beers. Chris and I headed back to my apartment and crashed out for the evening.
So here are some of the fruits of my labors. You can see more photos from day 3 (and the other days as well) over on my TFTTF Minneapolis Workshop set on Flickr.
